Description of the original vehicle CMC Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage:

The Maserati Tipo 60/61 owes its legendary nickname „Birdcage“ to a stroke of genius by chief designer Giulio Alfieri – the construction of a 30 kg lightweight spaceframe, spun from over 200 short tube sections. Twenty-three examples were built between 1959 and 1961.
The American Lucky Casner was particularly successful with his „birdcage“ Tipo 61: at the 1,000 km race at the Nürburgring in May 1960, Stirling Moss and Dan Gurney, with car number 5, won in torrential rain against the toughest competition. Just one year later, the Camoradi team (Casner Motor Racing Division) repeated the same feat with drivers Casner/Gregory. These consecutive victories helped Maserati achieve new fame and a lasting top spot in the prestigious ranks of the sports car guild.
