CMC Ferrari 250 GTO, Le Mans, 1962 #19

The thirtieth 24 Hours of Le Mans, which took place on 23-24 June 1962, was spectacularly marked by the first participation of the newly developed Ferrari 250 GTO, which entered the race with great anticipation and high expectations. The race was also the 8th round of the World Sports Car Championship. What was new this time was that the participating vehicles were divided into 18 different racing classes. Among those competing in the Experimental class was the eventual overall winning team Olivier Gendebien / Phil Hill in a powerful Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Testa Rossa Spyder.

Ferrari's new trump card, the 250 GTO with chassis no. 3705 and road registration MO-77914, was entered in the GT class under the Belgian/French driver pairing of Pierre Noblet/Jean Guichet. A racing team with great endurance experience, prudence and excellent driving skills. 55 teams started on the 13.461 km long course. After 24 hours and 331 completed laps = 4,451.255 km, the pilot team Olivier Gendebien / Phil Hill were able to celebrate their victory in the overall classification. The average speed was 185.469 km/h, with Phil Hill achieving the fastest lap in the Ferrari 330 TRI LM Spyder in 3.57.700 = 204.202 km/h.

But the results of the winning pair in the GT class, Pierre Noblet / Jean Guichet in the Ferrari 250 GTO with starting number 19 and the Tricolore racing stripes in blue, white and red on the bodywork, were also impressive. In the 24 hours, the two drivers covered a total of 4,384.136 kilometres. This corresponds to 326 laps driven at an average speed of 182.67 km/h. In addition to their GT class victory, this performance was enough for an excellent 2nd place in the overall classification. Three GTOs alone were among the top six finishers. Le Mans 1962 was therefore one of the most successful racing events for Ferrari to date.
