Description
Amalgam Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 - Mille Miglia winner 1938 | Limited edition in large scale 1:8.
The 8C 2900 was always destined for greatness, having been developed for the fearsome Italian Mille Miglia and the awe-inspiring 24 Hours of Le Mans and designed by the legendary Vittorio Jano. It was fitted with the 2.9-litre version of Alfa's well-established 8C engine, claimed to produce 225bhp, aided and abetted by twin superchargers and twin Weber rising-flow carburettors. Bodywork for the model was largely provided by Carrozzeria Touring, the master coachbuilder of the day, who crafted the 2900's stunning teardrop-shaped wings at the tapered rear. Over the course of five years of production, five examples alone, all made in 1938, stood out from the 40 or so 2900s produced.
This fine 1:8 scale model is based on one of only five cars built specifically for the Mille Miglia, chassis 412031. Car number 143, driven by Clemente Biondetti, emerged victorious from the 1938 edition of the legendary Italian race two minutes ahead of another 8c 2900 driven by Carlo Pintacuda. Pintacuda was well on his way to winning the fabled race after setting incredible average speeds in the early stages leading from the Italian town of Piacenza to Terni, but unfortunately for him, he locked up his brakes and lost position to Biondetti while carrying out repairs. After a gruelling twelve hours at the wheel, Biondetti was a worthy winner. The Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 Mille Miglia remains one of the most coveted pre-war cars of all time.
