Description

CMC Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage tubular frame - Limited to 2000 units

Only when the body is removed can the sophisticated lightweight construction of the Maserati chassis with its tubular trellis frame be admired at first hand.

Description of the original vehicle:

The Maserati Tipo 60/61 is probably one of the most famous racing sports cars of the early sixties. It became particularly famous for its complicated and unusual tubular lattice frame. Its inventor, the Maserati chief designer Giulio Alfieri, had more than 200 short pieces of tubing with a diameter of 10-15 mm joined together to form a seemingly indefinable „tangle“ which, on closer inspection, with the additional transverse and diagonal connections, resulted in an ingenious frame construction weighing only approx. 30 kg. A constructive masterstroke that amounts to a stroke of genius. In this way, a chassis was achieved that was both stiffer and significantly lighter than any other racing sports car of the time.
Last but not least, the complex, finely spun tubular lattice frame gave the Tipo 60/61 its memorable and now legendary nickname „Birdcage“.
