Description of the original vehicle:Jean Kerguen, one of the best private drivers of the late 1950s racing era in France, was given the opportunity to take part in the 1961 Le Mans race with his Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato. He was actively supported in his race preparations by Garage Mirabeau, Aston Martin's French dealer. In addition, the Mirabeau team was reinforced by Aston Martin works expert Des O'Dell, who was able to provide valuable instructions with his extensive development experience and excellent knowledge of the Le Mans racing scene.
Armed in this way, Jean Kerguen and his co-driver Jacques Dewez (pseudonym „Franc“) started the race from the front of the grid alongside two other Astons from the English racing team ERS. The start was excellent and the car ran perfectly and without any faults to the delight of its drivers and the entire racing team. The only mechanical intervention during the race was the replacement of the brake pads after 14 hours and a clutch readjustment after 16 hours of racing.
When Kerguen's Zagato came into the pits for the last time after 23 hours, he was in ninth position overall and the prospects of an excellent result were promising. Jacques Dewez was ready to tackle the final 50 minutes when he realised that the engine would not start after pressing the starter button. Hasty checks, carried out by expert Des O'Dell himself, revealed no recognisable defects when checking the battery and all visible cable connections as well as the external inspection of the starter motor.
After 286 successful laps or 50 minutes before the end of the race, the team had to abandon the race. Until the retirement, the vehicle was in third place in its class.
