Scuderia Ferrari, Formula 1's only ubiquitous team, is undoubtedly the sport's most famous name and, with 238 race wins and a total of 31 titles, undoubtedly the most successful, a clear lead over any of its rivals. The Ferrari name predates Formula 1 with its humble pre-war beginnings as the racing division of Alfa Romeo in the hands of Enzo Ferrari, before the first Ferrari, the 125 S, was built in 1947. The first Formula 1 championship was founded in 1950 and Ferrari made its debut at the second race in Monaco. Despite only seven races in 1950 and strong opposition in the dominant Alfa Romeo, it only took until July 1951 for José Froilán González to score Ferrari's first victory, and just one more season for Alberto Ascari to win their first drivers' championship. Ferrari was already world-famous by the start of the next decade, winning the first of its constructors' championships and its fifth drivers' title in 1961. As many Formula One teams rose and fell over time, Ferrari continued to adapt, surpassing and winning a combined 10 titles between 1960 and 1980, then the golden era, with Michael Schumacher and technical boss Ross Brawn. Ferrari would go on to secure six outright constructors' titles from 1999 to 2004, with Schumacher being the drivers' champion in all but one of those seasons. In the first 1000 races, 75 drivers raced for the Scuderia, and a further 35 competitors raced privately in Ferraris. 38 drivers have claimed at least one Grand Prix victory, while 9 have taken on the mantle of world champion with the famous red racing suits.
