The Alfa Romeo 1900, which through the advertising slogan „The family car that wins the race“ It gained fame and was presented in 1950. It marked a historical milestone as the Milanese automaker's first vehicle to be produced on an assembly line.

With its dual orientation, the model combined the elegance and everyday usability of a saloon with the performance of a sporty competition vehicle. This was concisely demonstrated by the 1900 through numerous successes in the touring car class.

Technically, the vehicle featured rear-wheel drive. The gearbox had either four or five gears, depending on the version. In early models, the gear lever was located on the steering wheel, while in later, sportier versions, it was moved to the centre console. In addition to its widespread use as a private touring car, the Alfa Romeo 1900 was also used by the Italian State Police. Due to its distinctive front-end design and the black paintwork of the patrol cars at the time, it was given the characteristic nickname there „Panther“.
