Following the coupé's debut in 1969, demand for an open-top Spider variant quickly arose. The new model was presented to the public at the 1972 Geneva Motor Show, where it received widespread approval. The historical production figures clearly demonstrate this success: out of approximately 4,000 vehicles produced in the series, 1,200 were Spider models.

Compared to its predecessor, the 206 GT, significant technical modifications were made, particularly in the engine department. For instance, the original aluminium engine block was replaced by a cast-iron construction. The characteristic features of this open-top version include the removable roof panel and the elaborately designed Daytona-style seats. Their complex structure, consisting of numerous fine leather strips, lends the interior a high degree of historical authenticity.
