HISTORY (ORIGINAL VEHICLE) With the Type C, Auto Union launched a 750kg formula racing car in 1936 that was able to compete with the established brands, above all Mercedes-Benz. Developed by Ferdinand Porsche, an important design feature of the racing car was the revolutionary arrangement of a 16-cylinder V-engine behind the driver and in front of the rear axle. The engine was supercharged by a Roots supercharger and achieved an output of 520 hp at 5000 rpm in the third development stage Type C. The sheer power demanded the utmost sensitivity and absolute driving skill from the driver. None other than Bernd Rosemeyer, the new star in Grand Prix racing, mastered this racer so skilfully and confidently that he became the undisputed top driver from 1936 onwards and rushed from victory to victory for the brand with the four intertwined rings. The combination of the ingenious Type C racing car and the talented young driver Bernd Rosemeyer became a success story in 1936 with 5 Grand Prix victories and the crowning glory as European champion. Bernd Rosemeyer was also the superior driver in 1937 with his Type C, again winning 5 races and thus continuing to prevent the unrestricted dominance of Mercedes.
