Description
CMC Ferrari 250 LM, winner 24H France 1965, #21, chassis 5893, Rindt/Gregory, RHD. High-quality collector's model in 1:18 scale.
N.A.R.T. entered Gregory and Jochen Rindt for Masten in the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans with chassis 5893. The N.A.R.T. 250 LM outperformed the principally faster Ferrari and Ford prototypes and won the race. In 1970, the vehicle was acquired by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, where it has been on display ever since.
Jochen Rindt competed in the Indy 500 and won Monaco in 1970 in legendary fashion on the last corner. However, his breakthrough came with his victory at Le Mans in 1965.
At short notice, Rindt was given the opportunity to drive for the North American Racing Team.
This was a kind of Ferrari semi-works team. The team owner: Luigi Chinetti, who had contested all Le Mans races between 1932 and 1953 and won three times. Chinetti had very good relations with Maranello. After obtaining US citizenship in 1946, he became the most important Ferrari dealer in the growing US market over the years.
Rindt, who only received clearance two days before the race because he had a BP contract but drove the car on Shell fuel, was by no means one of the favourites when he arrived at the Sarthe. His Ferrari 250 LM was considered to have no chance. And his partner at the time was Masten Gregory, known as 'Catastrophy Gregory' because he had previously jumped out of moving racing cars five times due to brake defects.
At 7 p.m., Rindt and Gregory were at the back of the field after numerous faults in the early stages. Rindt wanted to give up and had already changed his clothes to go home, but veteran Gregory persuaded the debutant to continue. But he made one condition: „I'm only going full throttle.“
Three Fords had already retired in the first two hours, while the disc brakes on the works Ferraris caused unexpected problems. By midnight, Rindt and Gregory were already in 13th place.
Rindt drove completely unleashed in the dark and made up position after position - a sensational race to catch up that hardly anyone had thought possible, favoured by the retirement of all the works Fords and Ferraris.
At dawn, the Rindt Ferrari took the lead for the first time - and Rindt held on to the top position before letting Gregory take the wheel for the final turn as agreed. The Ferrari 250 LM, which the „full-throttle animal“ Rindt maltreated properly, did not exactly make it easy for him, but held on to the chequered flag. The gearbox only failed on the final lap. „It's a good thing that Masten finished the race,“ said winner Rindt later. "I would have continued at full throttle. Then it might have torn everything apart."
