The 1961 racing season is dominated by two Ferrari drivers - the American Phil Hill and the German Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips, who takes the hearts of his compatriots by storm with his modest manner. The two team-mates lead the Scuderia from victory to victory.
In addition to their driving skills, this success was undoubtedly due to the new racing car, which was developed for the 1.5-litre racing formula in force from 1961. Its striking feature: a pointed snout with unusually shaped cooling air vents, which soon earned the racing car the nickname „Sharknose“.
The title fight between Graf Berghe von Trips and Phil Hill takes place on 10 September 1961 in Monza. The German had 33 points, the American 29. Von Trips starts from pole position for the first time - but he makes a mistake and runs the risk of losing touch. But he doesn't give up, first overtakes Brabham, then Clark, pulls to the left before the steep bend - and overlooks the fact that Clark has launched a counter-attack and is already level with the Ferrari's rear axle with his Lotus. The cars collide. The Ferrari rolls over twice and is thrown against a fence, behind which the spectators are packed. Von Trips is thrown out of the cockpit and is killed instantly. 15 spectators die with him. It is one of the darkest days in the history of motor racing.
Phil Hill wins the race and becomes the first American to become Formula 1 World Champion. Ferrari also wins the constructors' title.
