Description of the original vehicle:

For the 1957 season, Maserati designed a new tubular frame made of lighter, thinner steel tubes. The exhaust pipes were moved past the windscreen on the left to the rear, where they merged into a single pipe that was routed to behind the rear wheels. The drum brakes were also revised and significantly optimised. These improvements gave the 250 F its additional designation of „lightweight construction“ and made it an exceptionally successful vehicle with which Juan Manuel Fangio was able to win his fifth world championship title in 1957.
One of the best Grand Prix races in Fangio's long career was the French GP in Rouen on 7 July 1957. The challenging 6.5 km circuit with fast corners and downhill twists and turns suited the driving genius Fangio very well. Fangio started the race with starting number 2 and finished as the winner with a lead of around 50 seconds. A now „famous dent“ in the nose of the Maserati 250 F, which Fangio suffered as a result of an involuntary off-road excursion, bore witness to the hard-fought battles for position with his rivals. Luigi Musso in a Ferrari Tipo 801 came second, followed by Collins and Hawthorn in Lancia / Ferrari in third and fourth place.
Another small episode on the sidelines: Fangio's stable mate Jean Behra, who was in 6th place, had to stop his Maserati 250 F shortly before the finish and push it across the finish line himself.
