Description
CMC Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé, 1955, blue interior
The so-called “Uhlenhaut Coupé” is one of the icons of Mercedes-Benz brand history. Only two examples were built, officially as racing prototypes. The technology of the open-top 300 SLR racing sports car was concealed beneath the elegant bodywork; the coupé was to be used in racing as a closed version. As Mercedes-Benz ended its involvement in motorsport after the 1955 season, it was no longer used.
The Uhlenhaut Coupe was equipped with the eight-cylinder in-line engine from the Mercedes W196. This engine had desmodromic valve control and produced 302 hp at 7500 rpm. Initially, the Coupe version of the 300 SLR was to be used in endurance races. However, this never materialised, as Mercedes withdrew from motor racing in 1955.
