The major annual Mille Miglia event had a particularly attractive field of participants in 1955. Mercedes-Benz had big plans and sent an armada of four 300 SLR racing cars, which were used for the first time. Well-known top drivers were to contest victory against the fiercest competitors such as Ferrari, Maserati and Aston Martin. Half of Italy was on its feet, eagerly awaiting the national racing event.
Am 01. Mai 1955, morgens um 7:01 Uhr verläßt der 300 SLR mit der Start-Nr. 701 (Startnummer = Startzeit) und sein Fahrer Karl Kling (ohne Beifahrer) die Startrampe in Brescia, um die rund 1600 km lange Strecke der 22. Mille Miglia unter die Räder zu nehmen.
Nach dem Wendepunkt in Rom ereilt Karl Kling sein Schicksal. Er kommt von der Straße ab, als er einem Zuschauer ausweicht, der unvorsichtig die Straße überquert. Kling`s SLR landet stark beschädigt im Straßengraben. Für den glücklicherweise unverletzten Fahrer das bittere Aus.
The outcome of the race is now world-famous and has gone down in racing history. Stirling Moss celebrated a triumphant victory.
