History:
After returning to Grand Prix racing in 1934, Mercedes was immediately able to look back on a very successful season. In order to be prepared for the 1935 racing year, technical improvements were made to the vehicle and the engine output was increased to 430 hp.
The new racing season kicked off with the Monaco Grand Prix on 22 April 1935 in Monte Carlo. Mercedes had entered three cars with the drivers Caracciola, von Brauchitsch and the Italian Luigi Fagioli. Well-known drivers such as Nuvolari, von Dreyfus and Chiron (all driving Alfa Romeos) competed as serious opponents. Maserati and Bugatti were also expected to finish in good positions. Auto Union did not even enter the race.
After the start, Fagioli immediately took the lead of the field with starting number 4. Luigi Fagioli clearly dominated the rest of the race and finished unchallenged with a half-lap lead as the clear winner, giving Mercedes-Benz a perfect start to the Grand Prix.
This promising winning streak was to continue over the course of the season. In the end, the team won 9 victories in a total of 11 races and, with Rudolf Caracciola, who won 6 Grand Prix, was the European champion of 1935.
