In 1954, the Daimler-Benz test department created a unique, hand-built vehicle: the Mercedes-Benz racing transporter. With its deep blue Daimler-Benz paintwork, the soft curves of the bodywork and a top speed of 170 km/h, „the blue wonder“ attracted just as much attention as the W 196 and 300 SLR racing cars on its loading area.
When Daimler-Benz withdrew from Formula 1 racing at the end of 1955, the racing transporter also disappeared from the public eye and was regrettably scrapped in 1967.
It was not until the early 1990s that Daimler-Benz remembered its gem and resurrected it as an identical replica under the direction of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Centre. The racing transporter was presented to an enthusiastic audience at the Festival of Speed in Goodwood in the south of England on the occasion of the birthday parade to mark the 100th anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz brand in 2001.
