CMC Porsche 904 Carrera GTS Bonhams Scottsdale Auction 2017 M-237
High-quality collector's model in 1:18 scale.
This strikingly original 904 has enjoyed 48 years of careful care and only sporadic use by its long-time owners. According to the factory data card, 904-098 was produced with a 587/3 Carrera engine, painted in a light ivory colour and fitted with a blue interior with fabric seats. The car was delivered on Dunlop tyres.
This 904-098 was originally purchased by J.L. Brundage and later sold to Ted Tidwell from Jacksonville. Tidwell started a short but successful racing career and finished
in September 1964 at the SCCA event in Bainbridge, Georgia, taking second place in the modified E class. Around the same time, the car took first place in the Chimney
Rock hill climb, where it is believed to have set a new record. In 1965, 904- 098 finished 9th overall and second in the 2-litre GT class at the USRRC event in Pensacola and finished first in the production-based Class A at Savannah Effingham 904-098 was offered for sale in November 1965 and subsequently went to two dealers. One sold the original engine to a buyer in Ohio and the other installed a Type 547/4 Carrera engine instead, originally from a 550 Spyder. Presumably this dealer also painted the car in the current dark blue colour with a white racing stripe and starting number circles.
Bruce Herrington from Virginia took over the car as the new owner in November 1968 and received a licence from the local authorities in Virginia in April 1969. Although he sold the
car for almost 20 years, he rarely drove it, only using it once at a PVA event at the Marlboro Raceway. In 1989, 904-098 came into the hands of Werner Schoch and Heinz Heinrichs, both 904 experts. By chance, a Porsche collector from Denmark was looking for an original 904 and the car was then sold there via a third party. In 1992, the Danish owner acquired the original 4-camshaft engine, engine no. 99090, which had come into the possession of ex-racing driver Warren Eads and had been modified by his mechanic, the respected Carrera expert and former driver Al Cadrobi.
