Description
Pocher Porsche 917K - Gulf Edition - 1:8 scale finished model
The striking Gulf livery is inspired by the car that motorsport legends Derek Bell and Jo Siffert drove in the Monza 1000 km race in 1971. One of the fastest racing cars of all time, it finished second in this race, falling behind its sister Porsche 917K driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Jackie Oliver.
The concept was outrageous, building not one but 25 Le Mans challengers at enormous cost, qualifying it for „sports car“ status and circumventing the 3.0-litre prototype limit. In one fell swoop, the resulting 4.5 to 5 litre 917 (the largest displacement air-cooled race car ever) rendered its prototype rivals obsolete. Truly one of the most legendary racing cars in the history of motorsport. Initially it had been a lumbering beast, tamed for 1970, but it was a match for its rivals.
For two seasons it outperformed its rivals, winning one world championship race after another, including Le Mans in 1970 and 1971, after which its speed of over 240mph was labelled „too high“, prompting regulators to ban high-volume race cars from endurance racing. At this point, it turned its attention to America, where it crushed its rivals in turbocharged form and cemented its legacy as one of the greatest racing cars of all time.
This livery is the 917k in Gulf livery from 1971, which was driven by the British motorsport legend Derek Bell and the Swiss Jo Siffert in the 1000 km race in Monza, where it finished second, only behind its sister Porsche 917k.
