The new V12 unit was longer, heavier and thirstier than the V10 engines powering many of McLaren's rivals, yet it was hoped that its circa 720 bhp output would compensate. During engine testing with the MP4/5C chassis, the unit failed to convince reigning world champion Ayrton Senna, who was quick to tell the Japanese engineers what he thought of it in his usual blunt style. The Japanese, however, stood firm, claiming Honda engines were built for reliability rather than outright performance. In hindsight, they were correct. Senna and McLaren made a dream start to the season – four wins in the first four races, with teammate Gerhard Berger taking two podiums. The increased engine weight was partly offset by McLaren's latest development of its six-speed gearbox.

Although the car itself looked similar to the previous year's MP4/5B, its aerodynamic profile differed significantly, with designers Neil Oatley and his team having received valuable input from Henri Durand, who had joined from Ferrari in mid-1990. Numerous changes to the chassis were required, not least to accommodate the longer engine and the enlarged fuel tank needed for its greater thirst. Although the new chassis was four centimetres longer, it was considerably more stable in terms of torsional rigidity and consisted of even fewer basic components than before. The suspension also saw changes – an aspect of the car that had dramatically altered from the previous year: the pushrod-activated coil-spring dampers were now mounted on top of the chassis ahead of the cockpit, rather than being installed vertically on either side of the footwell.

Senna's perfect start gave McLaren a comfortable lead in the Constructors' World Championship, a lead that was to prove crucial as the team's performance waned. A double retirement at Montreal was a reality check for the team, as closest rivals Williams-Renault closed in, their V10 power unit proving increasingly reliable. The Honda V12's increased thirst brought its own challenges. Despite intensive development of the engine management, Senna ran out of fuel twice during the season: at Silverstone on his way back to the pits, and at Hockenheim on the final lap. Following the German Grand Prix, Williams moved ahead of McLaren, leading by a single point. Undeterred, Honda continued to develop its V12, improving mid-range driveability and reducing friction issues with new specifications throughout the season. New coupled wishbones were also introduced to reduce roll, and a cockpit-adjustable ride-height mechanism was also added.

In Budapest, the MP4/6 found form just in time for Senna to take victory with a strong drive, ending a five-race winless streak. In the following race at Spa, he was victorious again despite a gearbox issue, leading Berger to a one-two finish. However, rivals responded and dominated the field in both Portugal and Spain; in the latter, Senna struggled with the wrong tyre choice but reclaimed the championship lead. In the penultimate race at Suzuka, Berger took his sole victory of the season and his first for McLaren, after Senna let him through in another one-two finish. This put Senna in an unassailable position with 96 points, clinching his third and final title, while Berger finished fourth with 43 points. McLaren secured the constructors' championship in the final race of the season, the flood-ruined Australian Grand Prix, which was halted after 14 laps.

In total, the MP4/6 achieved eight wins, 11 further podium finishes, 10 pole positions, five fastest laps, and 139 points, which brought Senna the Drivers' World Championship and McLaren the Constructors' World Championship.

This high-quality, 1:8 scale model of the McLaren MP4/6 has been handcrafted and finished in our workshops, using detailed paint and material specifications and original CAD data supplied directly by McLaren Racing.
